This Saturday: Knock the knotweed out of the Prom!

Green Team Volunteer Day

9-11 am

Saturday, May 19

Eastern Promenade

Meet at the middle parking lot on Cutter Street

KnotweedJoin us from 9-11 am Saturday, May 19 for our monthly Green Team Volunteer Day. This month we'll tackle a patch of invasive knotweed near the middle parking lot off Cutter Street. Wear long pants and appropriate shoes and don't forget your gloves, water and sunscreen. Please also bring pruning shears, loppers or rakes if you have them.

Friends of the Eastern Promenade and the City of Portland are working together to manage invasive species on the Prom.

Why do we need to worry about invasive plants?

  • They interrupt the natural ecosystem of the park, disrupting native plants and wildlife.
  • The plants grow quickly in height in many areas on the Eastern Promenade, particularly on the slopes that are difficult to mow.
  • Removal of invasive species will be a long-term process, requiring multiple cuttings every year for a number of years.

Green Team Volunteer Days are the third Saturday of the month from April through October. Please check our website or Viewpoint e-newsletter for meeting locations. Future dates:

9-11 am Saturday, June 16

9-11 am Saturday, July 21

9-11 am Saturday, Aug. 18

Saturday (5/19) @ 8:30am
I will be leading a crew to work on the big bridge (BR4-4) crossing the ravine in section W2 (see drawing of bridge below).  The wood is prepped and is ready to go at the bridge location.  We will need to dig the footings and do the assembly.  Meet at the Gilman Rd gate to the power line corridor at 8:30am or find us on the trail.  Please respond if you are planning to join us.  Should be a fun build!

Tuesday (5/22), 12:00pm - 3pm

Monday (6/4) @ 8:15am - 1:30pm
